how do I express the area of a square as a monomial

Well, the Area of a Rectangle = Length x Width, and a square is a rectangle with all equal sides, which means Length = Width, so the Area of a Square = Length x Length = Length^2, which you can write as x^2. The Area of a Square = x^2, where x is the length of one side of the square.
