Does a liquid give off energy or absorb energy when it turns into a gas? when it turns into a solid?

Liquid would give off energy when transitioning into the solid phase, but absorb energy as moves into the gas one. This is based on the arrangement of the phases according the molecular theory of solid, liquid, and gas.
